We are proud to introduce the latest addition to our collection of legendary colors, Slate Blue/Autumn Glory, in honor of the University of Virginia!

A Brief History of Robert Redd & The University of Virginia
The fascinating and unpredictable Legend of Robert Redd was in part forged by his time at the University of Virginia. Indeed the Legend of Robert Redd began in his early years, yet, was further bolstered while attending The University before the turn of the century.
It is fitting then; the Legend and the University are brought together in this year, once again.
Like those years after Reconstruction, Charlottesville was, at worst, an environment of open- mindedness and creativity. Robert Redd was a Cavalier of course, evident in his zest for progress, his love of fine ladies, and a most unique sense of humor.
Robert Redd occasionally found himself prey to the beautiful ladies at the University… apparently, he was quite well thought of. While attending the university Redd had his hand in many projects and endeavors. In fact the REDD Gentlemen’s knit shirts inspired by the Legend of Robert Redd are superbly designed and fit the frame of any gentleman and even a lady or two…Thus making him twice, nay thrice as desirable!
The Robert Redd UVA shirts are not only in high demand, but made specifically for lovers of the University.
Please see our unique and fun color story of the founding of the University of Virginia Colors of Orange and Blue how Robert Redd allegedly played a part.

Robert Redd, LLC has come a long way since our early days.
I first conceived of Robert Redd®, the Concept, Brand and Products offering while renting a summer cottage in the dead of winter in Newport, Rhode Island; about four months after 9-11. At that time I was selling software/global partnerships and working for a company that sold a platform that didn’t work so well.
In the preceding years, I had co-founded an educational software company and I just knew that I wanted to do something else (again). I had already created Earlyman, my consulting firm that specialized in branding and marketing, but it was very important to me to create a business out of something tangible.
Initially, I wasn’t sure what that idea would be, but I knew I wanted to stop focusing on revenue models that were based solely on advertising and sponsorships. Additionally, I recognized that if I really wanted to do well financially, I would have to sell something of quality that worked and worked well. Hence the desire to find the finest materials on the planet!
Most importantly, I decided that then and there if I were to use the finest materials, I would also have to come up with a compelling story for this product, whatever it would be. Everyone knows that a good story is the oldest form of entertainment on the planet. So I set out to couple the two in the most memorable way.
The Legend of Robert Redd™ was naturally the most effective delivery mechanism for future products that I would create and sell. Once the foundation for the Robert Redd brand was established I set out to compliment it with ideal products.
Naturally, I contemplated all kinds of tangible products. From electronics, to building materials, to writing, international shipping, to apparel…I am a clotheshorse and it seemed like a good idea at the time, so I investigated apparel more deeply.
I would learn that one of the finest and most superior quality materials available for producing apparel was Peruvian Pima Cotton. Coupling that material with my unique idea for branding, marketing, packaging and positioning would produce a unique product, but what product?
I started with gentlemen’s knit shirts: The Charles and The Murdoch. I knew if I could produce the first styles and successfully brand it with the Robert Redd name, I would have a winner.
And we do!
Thanks to our wonderful customers, partners, employees and supporters Robert Redd’s legend continues to grow!
In the next post I will shed some light on how the Legend of Robert Redd comes to life and how the story unfolds. Until then, we hope that you will follow us and share your thoughts with us as we trudge the road to happy destiny. Please enjoy, as we share our experience, strength and hope with you!
Here’s to you with future adventures in mind . . .

For most of the US, tonight marks the night where we move
our clocks forward one hour and begin Daylight Savings Time. Some grumble
(yours truly included), saying we are losing an hour of sleep. On the other
hand we should take this as a mark able opportunity to get a jumpstart on
spring.
Several things are advised you do this weekend in preparation
of the spring (checking your smoke alarm), but I am going to give you a
piece of advice for springing your wardrobe into the warmer months of the year.
This is something Robert Redd knows a thing or two about… we do make short
sleeve knits!
So, you took advantage of our Early Spring Sale (if not,
don’t worry there are still a few days left), and now you need some pants to go with that Antiguan Blue/GG Green
Murdoch that just arrived in the mail.
Well here are a couple of suggestions for you:
Bonobos - At their core a true trouser company. Many styles for every occasion. A pair of Easter Island Chinos are the perfect all cotton pairing to your REDD shirt.
Bills Khakis – A great selection of various weights. For the spring I suggest the Leightweight
Cotton Poplins
Mountain Khakis - More option and Colors. For spring try the M's Lake Lodge Twill Pant. They have a
women’s and kid’s line as well.
Keep in mind, these two suggestions are merely my opinion and you know
what they say about opinions…
Speaking of opinions, I would love to read about your favorite bottoms to
go with our tops! Leave your comments
below.

There are two well known Bloody Marys
that are often the point of good conversation. One is a combination of clear
spirits and the finest of flavors, starting with tomato base, the other Mary I,
Queen of England and Ireland. There are several other Bloody Marys, including
one having to do with a spirit and a mirror, but we will leave these alternatives
for other discussions. Today we pay homage to the drink we often sip on a sunny
Sunday afternoon, whilst having brunch.

First,
let us take in a brief history lesson. What is the origin of the term Bloody
Mary? Like most good things in life, its origins are a bit cloudy. When
narrowing down the search, two people prominently appear. The suspects in
question for creating such a fine concoction include Fernand Petiot in 1921, at New York Bar,
a frequent hang out of one Ernest Hemingway, and George Jessel in 1939. Interestingly, Petiot, in an interview printed
in the July 1964 edition of The New
Yorker more or less gives credit to the name and drink to Jessel, but
claims he brings the drink into what we now know it to be:
“I initiated the Bloody Mary of today,” he told The New
Yorker. “Jessel said he created it, but it was really nothing but vodka and tomato juice when I took it
over. I cover the bottom of the shaker four large dashes of salt, two dashes of
black pepper, two dashes of cayenne pepper, and a layer of Worcestershire
sauce; I then add a dash of lemon
juice and some cracked ice, put in two ounces of vodka and two ounces of thick
tomato juice, shake, strain, and pour. We serve a hundred to a hundred and
fifty Bloody Marys a day here in the
King Cole Room and in the other
restaurants and the banquet rooms.”
This is specifically suspect
given the fact that Petiot is credited with it elsewhere almost 20 years earlier
than Jessel.
The muddiness of the
origins of the drink history aside, the name Bloody Mary itself, is
twice as confusing. Is it named after:
- Mary I?
- The lady spirit that can be summoned from a mirror?
- An ex-lover of one of the “creators”?
- A famed movie star of the day?
- A waitress named Mary at the Bucket of Blood bar in Chicago?
- Or possibly a jab at Soviet Russian iconography of Saint Mary when
tomato juice was added to vodka for President Nixon during Soviet dignitary’s
visits?
As long as the name and the
mix make for an appetizing discussion over a delicious libation, do any of the historic
details make a difference?
On to what really matters –
making a quality Bloody Mary.
At Robert Redd we like our
Bloodys a bit on the spicy side. To acquire this, we prefer our Bloody REDDTM
Mix. Best served in four (4) parts, with one (1) part of our favorite Vodka,
and one (1) part love, over ice, stirred and with a squeeze of lime, garnished
with a celery stalk.

If you don’t happen to have
a bottle of Bloody REDDTM we can suggest a few sub-par alternatives
to our Bloody REDDTM that can hopefully whet your appetite. If you
would like a bottle of Bloody REDDTM, drop us a line and we will make
the effort to get you one before your next Sunday Brunch!
Again, we aren’t to be
responsible for the lack of taste with any of these alternatives, but we love
to support your efforts in getting housed!

The Murdoch: Sturdy, classic, quintessentially REDD. For young guns exuding confidence and an adventuresome spirit, and sporting a lean figure to boot. The most high-definition REDD knit, so to speak—perfect for the gentleman with an eye for impeccable detail, and eyes on him for the same.
As we've said before, REDD designs every make of shirt with particular personal qualities in mind. The Murdoch—a lightweight jersey available in both Classic and Slim fits, each featuring the signature left chest pocket and three-button placket—distinguishes itself for being perhaps our most powerful shirt, striking a bold statement with its flat-knit collar and banded sleeves, yet remaining in possession of a quiet, steady reserve. Exuberant, but not loud; forceful, but not violent; fitting you with the white-hot precision of a laser beam. Look up "strapping" in the thesaurus, and you'll see "The Murdoch." And then the thesaurus will explode.

Robert Redd, LLC is honored and delighted to announce that it will serve as the main sponsor to the 2010 Foxfield Spring Races. And we at REDD like to believe that the partnership would have made Robert proud. Although he passed before having a chance to witness the first Foxfield race in 1978, Robert Redd was a great patron of the steeplechase, having attended hundreds of races in America and Europe in his lifetime—and according to legend, winning a small fortune doing so.
Needless to say, we are pleased to carry on the tradition. So what does this mean for you, the customer and/or Foxfield patron? First and foremost, we'll be offering 20% off on all REDD products up through the day of the event—just use the promo code "foxfield" on our checkout page. Simple, right?
Of course, part of the fun of attending Foxfield—or any steeplechase race, for that matter—is figuring out what to wear. You already know that the standard get-up for a gentleman at the races includes a collar and tie, but if you're looking to distinguish yourself, one of our classic REDD knits will be more than sufficient. We've picked out some colors below that are best suited to the event—check them out at our official Foxfield page, and keep an eye on that space for future developments.
