We are proud to introduce the latest addition to our collection of legendary colors, Slate Blue/Autumn Glory, in honor of the University of Virginia!

A Brief History of Robert Redd & The University of Virginia
The fascinating and unpredictable Legend of Robert Redd was in part forged by his time at the University of Virginia. Indeed the Legend of Robert Redd began in his early years, yet, was further bolstered while attending The University before the turn of the century.
It is fitting then; the Legend and the University are brought together in this year, once again.
Like those years after Reconstruction, Charlottesville was, at worst, an environment of open- mindedness and creativity. Robert Redd was a Cavalier of course, evident in his zest for progress, his love of fine ladies, and a most unique sense of humor.
Robert Redd occasionally found himself prey to the beautiful ladies at the University… apparently, he was quite well thought of. While attending the university Redd had his hand in many projects and endeavors. In fact the REDD Gentlemen’s knit shirts inspired by the Legend of Robert Redd are superbly designed and fit the frame of any gentleman and even a lady or two…Thus making him twice, nay thrice as desirable!
The Robert Redd UVA shirts are not only in high demand, but made specifically for lovers of the University.
Please see our unique and fun color story of the founding of the University of Virginia Colors of Orange and Blue how Robert Redd allegedly played a part.

Robert Redd, LLC has come a long way since our early days.
I first conceived of Robert Redd®, the Concept, Brand and Products offering while renting a summer cottage in the dead of winter in Newport, Rhode Island; about four months after 9-11. At that time I was selling software/global partnerships and working for a company that sold a platform that didn’t work so well.
In the preceding years, I had co-founded an educational software company and I just knew that I wanted to do something else (again). I had already created Earlyman, my consulting firm that specialized in branding and marketing, but it was very important to me to create a business out of something tangible.
Initially, I wasn’t sure what that idea would be, but I knew I wanted to stop focusing on revenue models that were based solely on advertising and sponsorships. Additionally, I recognized that if I really wanted to do well financially, I would have to sell something of quality that worked and worked well. Hence the desire to find the finest materials on the planet!
Most importantly, I decided that then and there if I were to use the finest materials, I would also have to come up with a compelling story for this product, whatever it would be. Everyone knows that a good story is the oldest form of entertainment on the planet. So I set out to couple the two in the most memorable way.
The Legend of Robert Redd™ was naturally the most effective delivery mechanism for future products that I would create and sell. Once the foundation for the Robert Redd brand was established I set out to compliment it with ideal products.
Naturally, I contemplated all kinds of tangible products. From electronics, to building materials, to writing, international shipping, to apparel…I am a clotheshorse and it seemed like a good idea at the time, so I investigated apparel more deeply.
I would learn that one of the finest and most superior quality materials available for producing apparel was Peruvian Pima Cotton. Coupling that material with my unique idea for branding, marketing, packaging and positioning would produce a unique product, but what product?
I started with gentlemen’s knit shirts: The Charles and The Murdoch. I knew if I could produce the first styles and successfully brand it with the Robert Redd name, I would have a winner.
And we do!
Thanks to our wonderful customers, partners, employees and supporters Robert Redd’s legend continues to grow!
In the next post I will shed some light on how the Legend of Robert Redd comes to life and how the story unfolds. Until then, we hope that you will follow us and share your thoughts with us as we trudge the road to happy destiny. Please enjoy, as we share our experience, strength and hope with you!
Here’s to you with future adventures in mind . . .

From Redd’s
journal, 1914: “Ever since being invited to accompany President Roosevelt on
his tour of the Amazon, I’ve found myself utterly captivated by the man and his
sense of the hunt. This afternoon, we stalked a crocodile along the riverbank,
lurking in the thick greens of the jungle bush, battling mosquitoes and a
variety of other nasties without name. The beast eluded us for nearly six
hours, slipping in and out of the muddy waters, and I was on the verge of
despair when Roosevelt called out to me in a booming whisper: ‘Redd. Stay
absolutely still.’

I froze.
Immediately to my right, the crocodile lay waiting—twelve feet long, teeth
bared. I stepped backward. The beast lay still.
It seems we’d found
our game. ‘What do you think?’ I asked the President. ‘Shall I shoot?’
‘Hmm.’ He lowered
his rifle. ‘Perhaps we ought to give the croc his victory.’
‘Suits me,’ I said.
‘I’m much more disposed to chasing some of the indigenous ladies.’

We left the reptile
in peace. That night, I found the only game I ever needed on the beach, by the
glittering sea—a lady in my arm, and a coconut in each hand.”

A view of the prestigious Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland
Another glimpse at Robert Redd's journal, from an undated entry: "Hit the Old Course again with partner-in-crime Walter Hagen, after an evening of excessive libations that lasted far past our bedtime and still haven't worn off, truth be told. Not quite playing to the best of our abilities, we mostly bragged our way through the course, trying to one-up each other's outrageous anecdotes."
Walter Hagen, professional golfer
"Walter claims that, after being refused entrance to a clubhouse dressing room due to his status as a professional golfer, he hired a Rolls Royce in which to change. It seemed like a hilarious waste to me, and I told him so. 'But why not?' he retorted. 'You're only here for a short visit, Robert,' he said. 'Don't hurry. Don't worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.' He reached over and plucked a lilac from the bush adjoining the fairway. 'Case in point,' he said, lifting it to his nose."

Destinations: Antigua

Looking for a place to enjoy the spring sun? For the tropically-inclined gentleman, the Caribbean island of Antigua is hard to beat.
Robert Redd was a man of the world, whose deeds and exploits spanned the globe, but Antigua—now the principal landmass of the larger country of Antigua and Barbuda—was one of his favorite retreats: a haven of beauty and exclusivity that never failed to leave him feeling satisfied and refreshed upon returning to business. Originally spotted by Christopher Columbus during his second his second voyage to the Americas in 1493—who named it in honor of the Virgin of La Antigua in Spain's Seville Cathedral—the island remained exclusively the home of the indigenous population until the English established the first permanent settlement in 1632. Since then, Antigua has been a hotbed of intrigue. Lord Horatio Nelson famously presided over Antigua and the larger Leeward Island chain from 1784 to 1787 as Senior Naval Officer. Today, a variety of notable figures, including Timothy Dalton, Eric Clapton, Giorgio Armani and Richard Branson, have lived or own property on the island.

St. John's Cathedral - a notable Antiguan destination
If you ever do embark on an Antiguan voyage, you'll want to make sure you know what to look for. We've provided a handy checklist, tried and tested, comprised of sights and spots you won't want to miss.
English Harbour and Nelson's Dockyard - Saturated with colonial history and island culture, Antigua's English Harbour originally served as a base for the British Navy during its golden era of naval supremacy. Since its abandonment and closure in 1889, Nelson's Dockyard has been completely restored, and is now the only Georgian dock in the world.

Betty's Hope Sugar Plantation - The first large sugar plantation on Antigua, of which only two sugar mills and the remains of the storehouse survive, and have been converted into an open-air museum by the island's government.

Shirley Heights - Offering a breathtaking perspective on the English Harbour, this former artillery fortification site now routinely features "barbecue, rum punch, and the plangent strains of steel band and reggae music." (link)

St. John's - The capital and largest city of Antigua and Barbuda, presided over by the magnificent St. John's Cathedral. A lively center of shopping and dining, with a farmer's market running on the city's southern edge on Friday and Saturday mornings, as well as a cultural museum housed in the colonial Court House.

Leading up to the release of the updated Robert Redd Color Stories, we at REDD are disclosing bits and pieces of the material we've collected and researched so far. Of particular note is an excerpt from a journal Robert Redd kept in his early twenties, in his college years, during which he spent considerable time learning abroad. In 1896, Robert had the following to say about his stay in France: "It's been said so often as to become banal, but there really is nothing like Paris in the springtime. Clouds against blue overhead, the Jardin des Tuileries all around, and the grand-standing Palais du Louvre on the horizon. I watched Madeline—excuse me, Margarette—walk the eight-sided perimeter of the reflecting pool, in which I swear you could see the image of the clouds more sharply than they appear in the firmament itself.
Maurice Prendergast, Sailboat Pond Tuileries
"But what a difference the daylight makes! Last night's misadventure in the Moulin Rouge is but a memory, yet the gaudy lights of the cabaret still dance across my mind's eye. And the taste of tangerine, offered to me by Margarette—or was it Melanie?—lingers still on the tip of my tongue."
